Hello Harry - Lilydale

It was decided that Tuesday night would be burgy night this week and so we went to Lilydale to check out Hello Harry, the burgy joint that had been taunting us on Instagram for a while now.

Chloe ordered the USA, which swirls with sweet and savoury flavours. Indeed, the beef and bacon provide the thick, meaty flavour while the onion rings and tomato jam add an undercurrent of sweetness. The pickles are cut lengthwise, which Chloe appreciated as it keeps them from plopping out the end of the burger when you grip it in a state of manic hunger. The combination of mayo, mustard, pickles, onion rings, bacon, cheese, beef and tomato jam is just amazing, as is the fact this burgy hardly produces any spillage.

I ordered the Redneck Burger, which tastes like a gourmet Whopper. Packing mayo, mustard, cheese, pickles, BBQ glaze, beef, onion, lettuce and tomato, it really is almost a replica of the Hungry Jack's classic. I think the mayo is the main culprit for the similar taste to Hungry Jack's. The lettuce is an odd stand out here. It's bursting with crispy freshness. It has a strong impact on the burger, which is strange since I usually find lettuce pretty boring. The red onion is cut into thick pieces, which I generally dislike as sometimes it leaves you wincing with a mouthful of onion at the expense of every other flavour. I didn't find it too annoying with the Redneck, although I would've given it extra points if the onion was thinly diced, or caramelised. However, Chloe found the onion overwhelming to the point of blanketing the taste of everything else, and said the lettuce only served to further wash out the flavour with how wet it was.

The onion rings here come across somewhere between battered and crumbed. They're crunchy and golden brown, and very sweet. They taste a bit like Hungry Jack's rings, but much bigger and better. Their sweetness really stands out, and I think they may even be the best onion rings I've ever had (Chloe contends that the rings at The Sporting Globe are better, but that's a debate for a different review).

Head-to-Head
The USA beats the Redneck in today's contest.

Pricing
There are some affordable burgies here at $10, however, the Redneck is $14 and the USA is $15. Onion rings are $7. Note that the Redneck and USA don't appear on the menu.

Ambience
With its graffiti-style murals, Hello Harry brings a touch of inner-city hipster vibe to the mountain-fresh suburb of Lilydale.

Dietary Requirements
There is a Middle Eastern chickpea burger for the vegetarians and vegans out there, and gluten-free buns are available.

Address
245 Main Street, Lilydale.

The Last Bite
The onion rings here are contenders for the best in Melby, and the USA doesn't scrub up too badly either. Check it out.
