8bit. - Swanston Street, Melbourne
We got a little hungry on our way to see some 2008-style scene-teen tunes by Escape the Fate, so we stopped by one of my favourite restaurants, 8bit. It's safely ensconced in my top three burgy joints in this city and I highly recommend it to anyone who fancies a burgy from time to time. The Swanston Street restaurant is fairly accessible by bus, train and tram, so there's no excuses for not going. The flagship store, however, is in Footscray, where the line snakes out the door and down the street.
I had the 8bit With Cheese, which is the first item on the menu. It packs all the usual suspects as ingredients, such as:
I had the 8bit With Cheese, which is the first item on the menu. It packs all the usual suspects as ingredients, such as:
- beef
- tomato
- lettuce
- red onion
- pickles
- cheese
- mustard
- ketchup
- 8bit sauce
The mustard is the headline act in this burgy. It receives strong support from the onion and 8bit sauce. The patty was a little pink on the inside, and the buns were soft. This isn't some charred, grisly burger. I loved it.
Madi had the Double Dragon, which includes:
- double beef
- double cheese
- double bacon
- pickles
- mustard
- lettuce
- ketchup
- 8bit sauce
She said it is a great burger, but a little difficult to eat. I had the last bite and in my opinion, it tastes like a really good cheeseburger.
Our sides included fries and onion rings. The fries are nothing worth writing about, so I'll skip straight to the rings. Fried in a thick batter, they are almost perfect. Light and airy, they are a delight to eat, but they could perhaps be a tad crunchier. The smoky barbecue sauce that comes with them is amazing. Chloe preferred dipping them in ketchup, but agreed that they are some of the better rings going around.
Pricing
The 8bit With Cheese will knock you back $11.50, while the Double Dragon is $15.50. The beer-battered fries are $5 and the onion rings are $5.50.
Ambience
The Swanston Street restaurant has a strong retro-gaming vibe. It gets a little crowded with all the foot traffic coming in off the street.
