Jacky Jones - Reservoir
Looking back over my reviews and all suburbs and towns they've taken me to has, in the context of the current situation, really made me feel as if I've taken things for granted. The idea of driving to Geelong or Maribyrnong for a burger seems like some getaway fantasy or a faded memory of the good ol' days. This lockdown, even though it's only a month old, has truly been surreal for this privileged city slicker. This pandemic has been an experience like no other. Let's hope it ends soon.
As a result of all the restrictions in place, Chloe and I have been keeping our culinary quests fairly local. Luckily, we find ourselves situated near a plethora of restaurants and takeaways, many of which offer burgers. So it was that we ordered some takeaway from Jacky Jones, a glossy, stylish fish and chip shop that also does burgers.
I ordered The Alabama. The big American name and accompanying photo on Uber Eats drew me in and I never considered purchasing anything else. It was almost love at first sight really and it was genuinely love at first bite. Packed with southern fried chicken breast, American cheese, bacon, slaw, pickles and chipotle mayo, The Alabama is a simple burger that kicks hard. The chicken is thick and juicy and the mayo really sizzles. The pickles make a tangy cameo appearance and the bacon is crisp. The cool slaw cuts away some of the heat but still leaves something tingling on your tongue. The only amendment I would make here is adding more pickles.
Chloe ordered the Cheese Royale, which looks like the next best option on the menu. Aussie lean beef, lettuce, tomato, cheese, caramelised onion, pickles, mustard and Jacky's smoked tomato sauce combine to make a classic cheeseburger of the highest order. The pickles and mustard are the standouts along with the soft patty and buns. This isn't your typical fish and chip shop cheeseburger dripping in grease either; it's a fresh and presentable version of what you would get at a dinky corner store takeaway. It oozes style and class and tastes as good as it looks.
We also got ourselves a side of onion rings. They are so light and fluffy we thought we were eating crispy little pieces of cloud. They are magnificent halos of onion and batter and again, no grease in sight. They are the best onion rings we've eaten yet.
The chips are bloody good as well. This was revealed to me the next day when I ate what was left of them cold out of the fridge. They were as crispy as they were when they were fresh out of the deep fryer the day before. Their texture was not chalky either, unlike most chips after spending the night not being eaten.

Head-to-Head
A very strong stalemate between The Alabama and the Cheese Royale. You can't go wrong with either of them. The Cheese Royale might slightly edge The Alabama on value.
Pricing
The Cheese Royale is only $8.50, offering truly stunning value. The Alabama is $12.50, which is still good value considering the quality of the burger.
Ambience
Slick and stylish, this is one hell of a fish and chipper.
